Irish Multiple Myeloma Society’s Second International Meeting

The IMMS annual meeting brings together leading Irish and International experts in Multiple Myeloma to discuss the most recent advances in treatment and patient care.

The Irish Multiple Myeloma Society (IMMS) Second International Meeting took place on Friday, September 4th, 2026, at The Gibson Hotel, Dublin, bringing together clinicians, patient advocates, researchers, and healthcare professionals from across Ireland and internationally for a full day of talks, discussions and collaboration focused on current and emerging developments in Multiple Myeloma.

Professor Paul Browne, IMMS President, opened the meeting with a welcome and introduction before the first session began.

The first session, chaired by Professor John Quinn, Professor Siobhan Glavey and Professor Joseph Mikhael, explored a range of important developments in Multiple Myeloma research and treatment.

Constantine S. Mitsiades, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Medical Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, opened the session with “Pharmacological inhibition of RAS in multiple myeloma”. This was followed by Dr Charlotte Pawlyn, Group Leader of Myeloma Biology and Therapeutics at ICR London, who discussed “The management of older patients with Myeloma in the immunotherapy era” and gave excellent clinical insights into the use of novel immunotherapies in older patients. The session also included Professor Steven P. Treon, MD, MA, MS, PhD, FACP, FRCP, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and expert on Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia who gave a state-of-the-art update on this complex topic.

The second session was chaired by Dr Mark Coyne, Dr Patrick Hayden and Dr Charlotte Pawlyn. Triona Ni Chonghaile, Associate Professor of Physiology and Medical Physics at RCSI gave insights into her research on “Plasticity in BCL-2 dependence in Multiple Myeloma”. This was followed by Brwa Hussein, Post Doc at the Lambe Institute for Translational Research, GUH, who discussed a new glycoimmune checkpoint in Multiple Myeloma.  The session concluded with a panel discussion.

The final session of the day was chaired by Professor Paul Browne, Professor Peter O’Gorman, Constantine S. Mitsiades and Professor Steven P. Treon.

Carlos Fernández De Larrea, Associate Professor/Consultant in the Department of Hematology at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, opened the session with some valuable insights into CAR-T centre development and academic CAR-T clinical trials for multiple myeloma in Spain.  Professor Joseph Mikhael, Professor at the Translational Genomics Research Institute, City of Hope, Arizona, USA, then discussed “Making sense of the options in relapsed Myeloma” which was a truly expert overview of this increasingly complex clinical space. The programme continued with Dr Eva Szegezdi, Director of Blood Cancer Network Ireland, who presented an update on the Myeloma Ireland Registry.

An addition to this year’s programming, the IMMS was delighted to host a dedicated nursing session, providing an opportunity to focus on the practical aspects of delivering care to patients with Multiple Myeloma. The session was chaired by Ger Walpole, Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Haematology, Sligo University Hospital, and Mary B. Kelly, Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Haematology, Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore.

Professor Joseph Mikhael opened the nursing session with “Immunotherapy made simple”. This was followed by Deirdre Moloney, CAR-T Coordinator at Galway University Hospital, who presented “Recognising and managing CRS and ICANS in Myeloma: A practical nursing approach”. The session concluded with Jackie Quinn, UKMS Nurse and AHP Group, who spoke on “Connecting expertise, advancing Myeloma care”. The nursing session concluded with a panel discussion.

Throughout the day, attendees had opportunities for discussion and exchange, as well as to view poster displays and meet sponsors. Before the meeting concluded Professor Siobhan Glavey announced the winners of the Abstract Poster Competition, recognising hard work and research by doctors in Multiple Myeloma. The 1st Poster Prize went to Kieran Brennan (Plasma Extracellular Vesicle Signatures as Liquid Biopsies for Diagnosis, Staging, and Daratumamab Response in Multiple Myeloma). The 2nd Poster Prize went to Catherine Duane (Integrated Multi-omic Profiling Reveals Migratory and Immune-Evasion Signatures in Extramedullary Multiple Myeloma: Opportunities for Therapeutic Optimisation) and the Joint 3rd Poster Prize went to Ellen Purcell (Oxidative Phosphorylation and mTORC Activation Drive Transcriptomic Divergence in Extramedullary Multiple Myeloma) and Niall O’Connell (Teclistamab for Relapsed Refractory Myeloma: A Single Centre Audit of Outcomes Since NCCP Approval).

Professor Michael O’Dwyer, Professor of Haematology from the University of Galway was welcomed as the incoming president of IMMS.
